RELIQUIA - Old vines make good wine

A bit of history

Lucignola is one of those grape varieties that, if it could speak, would have an unmistakable Sicilian accent. At one time, together with varieties such as Inzolia nera and Orisi, it was the queen of the island's vineyards. A few vines have survived and, from there, our adventure has begun again.

The ancient vine had to be brought to safety

In 2018, we had the idea of bringing Lucignola back to life by planting a hectare on our land.
We wanted to rediscover a piece of our family history and our land. And so, among the vineyards of Pachino, Lucignola came home, becoming one of the (new) pillars of Barone Sergio.

But our history is not only in the vineyards. Take a look at the mural ‘Le signore dell'acqua’ in our cellar: three women advancing from the past to the present, symbolising work in the vineyards and a return to the roots of our family.
In fact, we recently found old documents from the 19th century that helped us reconstruct part of our family history. Just as the repropagation of Lucignola has allowed us to rediscover this ancient Sicilian wine.

So, what are we drinking?

Lucignola is a tough and versatile grape variety, perfect for producing quality grapes that reflect our unique terroir. It has a medium productivity and ripens early, maintaining an excellent taste balance.
Our "Reliquia" wine is made from whole cluster vinification, resting 6 months in French oak tonneaux and a further 12 months in the bottle. The result? A ruby red wine with aromas of ripe red fruit, spices and herbaceous notes. On the palate, it has a robust structure, a balance between alcohol and acidity, and an aromatic persistence that makes you want the next sip, and another, and then another. In short, you get the picture.

In the end, Lucignola made it. It has resisted, it has been reborn in 2021 and today it gives us a wine that tastes of Sicily, the real Sicily. So you fill your glass, we continue to fill it with pride.
